Back in the day there was this thing called “Equal Time”. To oversimplify, if a television news show featured a Republican candidate, they had to then offer the same amount of airtime to his Democratic counterpart. It was a way of avoiding accusations of bias.

I don’t think they do it anymore, at least not in a rigorous way. I mean does FOX News regularly feature Democrats? I suspect not.

Nowadays there’s an insidious equivalent to the old rule. When an expert in a field appears on a television news program, his crackpot equivalent has to appear as well. So, when Neil Degrasse Tyson shows up somewhere, they have to also book a flat-earther or a Methodist.
